About Us

For over 55 years, Pennies has been part of Andover’s creative heartbeat.

What began as a family venture grew into something far greater: a welcoming space filled with knowledge, warmth and virtually everything you could need for your next project. Often described as an “Aladdin’s Cave,” Pennies has long been known for its well-stocked shelves, strong supplier relationships, and ability to source those hard-to-find essentials at short notice.

Whether you’re stepping into the shop for the first time or have been visiting for generations, you’re always welcomed as part of the Pennies family.

Our History

In 1990, Penny took over the shop from her father, continuing the family tradition of friendly, knowledgeable service. Alongside her fiancé Ian, she dedicated herself to ensuring Pennies remained not just a shop, but a cornerstone of the local community.

Under Penny’s care, the store flourished. Customers knew they could rely on her experience, practical advice and genuine kindness. Many projects across Andover — from school costumes to wedding dresses, knitted gifts to cherished repairs — have had Penny’s quiet guidance behind them.

Adding even more character to the shop were Marigold and Primrose, the beloved mascots who quickly became local celebrities in their own right.

When the COVID pandemic brought uncertainty, Penny and Ian ensured creativity never stopped. By introducing a safe drop-off service, they helped customers continue their projects during difficult times — always placing community safety and care first.

Their dedication helped cement Pennies as a trusted, much-loved institution.

Crafting runs deep in their own stories. Antonio has been knitting since childhood, taught by his nan. Kyran, too, learned from his grandmother. Having spent countless hours in the shop as customers, they experienced first-hand the warmth and sense of belonging Penny created.

Continuing the mascot tradition, Bella and Estella, their dachshunds, now greet customers with the same charm and personality that has always defined the shop.

Alongside maintaining the welcoming in-store experience, Antonio and Kyran are expanding Pennies digitally. Their goal is to ensure that even those who can no longer visit in person can still access the materials, inspiration and support they need.

The faces may evolve, but the heart of Pennies remains unchanged.
